Next month, Central Florida commuter railroad SunRail will begin tracking fare evasion through its SunCard fare cards, railroad officials announced this week.
SunRail riders are expected to tap their fare cards on a card reader every time they board or get off a train. Some riders are skipping a tap or riding beyond their purchased zone fare, agency officials said in a press release.
To enforce proper use of fare cards, riders who do not validate their card twice in a trip will now have their card “hot listed.” When a card is hot listed, the next time it is used the conductor will see a red ‘X’ and riders will be charged for a full trip. This practice will begin in mid-November, officials said.
This month, the SunRail ambassador team and conductors will be available at stations and on trains to explain that riders must tap on and off each time they board and alight the train and must purchase the correct number of fare zones per trip.
SunRail officials say enforcing good habits will allow the agency to collect more accurate riderships data.
