Swedish rail company orders Bombardier intercity trains

Bombardier Transportation June 28 received a $36 million order from Swedish County Traffic Company Skanetrafiken for seven additional Oresund intercity three-car trainsets.

The Contessa-type trains will be manufactured at Bombardier’s Kalmar and Vasteras facilities in Sweden, and delivered during fourth-quarter 2002, in conjunction with the ongoing delivery of 49 trainsets already ordered by Swedish and Danish customers.

Oresund trains initially entered service July 1, 2000, when the Oresund bridge — which connects Sweden and Denmark — opened. Less than a year after the bridge’s opening, rail traffic already is 40 percent higher than forecast. About 11,000 passengers cross the bridge by rail daily.
