Sydney Metro receives three design/build bids for subway's first stageAustralia’s Sydney Metro recently received bids from three joint ventures to construct tunnels and station caverns for the Metro Stage 1 subway project.
The bidders are the “Line 1” consortium featuring McConnell Dowell Corp., Abigroup and Obayashi Corp.; “MetroPrimo” consortium comprising Leighton Contractors and S.E.L.I. Spa; and Thiess/John Holland joint venture.
The successful bidder will design and construct twin tunnels for a 4.4-mile subway route, which will run between Central and Rozelle. Work includes tunnels and linings, drainage and cross passages, and excavation for stations and passenger entrances.
Sydney Metro expects to award the contract in the second quarter and launch construction in mid-2010.
Stage 2 of the subway, which would run from Central to Westmead, is in an “advanced planning stage,” according to the transit agency.
