TCU supports Public Transportation Preservation Act

The Transportation for America Coalition recently sent a letter to Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) seeking his support for the Public Transportation Preservation Act (H.R.5418/ S. 3412).

The bill would authorize $2 billion for transit agencies nationwide to help them close budget gaps or improve infrastructure. Agencies could use the funds to reduce fare increases and restore services that were cut after January 2009, or to prevent future service cuts or fare hikes through September 2011.

The monies the bill would provide in transit operating funds would help preserve transit service for millions of Americans, and save and create thousands of jobs, said officials of the Transportation Communications Union (TCU) — a coalition member — in a prepared statement.

“This legislation needs the full support of congressional leadership,” said TCU International President Bob Scardelletti.
