The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for 70 new subway trains for Line 2 and subway line extensions.
The RFP issuance follows the Nov. 29 announcement of C$1.2 billion in federal funding allocated to the TTC from the Canada Public Transit Fund. Of that amount, C$758 million is dedicated to procuring the new subway trains.
The province of Ontario also committed C$758 million in funding through the Ontario-Toronto New Deal agreement, with the city of Toronto contributing a matching amount, TTC officials said in a press release.
The TTC is allocating 55 trains to replace aging trains on Line 2 and 15 trains for Line 1 Yonge North and Line 2 Scarborough extension projects. The RFP also calls for options for up to an additional 150 trains to meet anticipated ridership growth and eventual replacement of trains on Line 1.
The new trains are expected to begin arriving in 2030. Until they are delivered, the TTC will implement a state-of-good-repair program to maintain the existing Line 2 trains, TTC officials said. The commission also has launched the procurement process for a new automatic train control system on Line 2.
