Today, the Fort Worth Transportation Authority will launch construction on a renovation project at the Richland Hills Trinity Railway Express station.

The project is designed to improve street and pedestrian access, expand parking, improve traffic flow around the station and encourage future development adjacent to the facility. The first phase calls for adding 100 parking spaces at the park-and-ride lot, bringing the total number of spaces to 478.

The second phase includes realigning a street and creating dedicated turn lanes to expedite traffic flow into and out of the station. Once the project is complete, private companies can develop the property adjacent to the station.

Meanwhile, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) soon will begin construction on a new MARC commuter-rail station in Edgewood.

The new station will provide a permanent facility at a key location on the Penn Line near the Aberdeen Proving Ground, a “critical component” in the federal government’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, according to MTA. BRAC aims to restructure military facilities to improve military forces’ efficiency and effectiveness.

The $4.3 million station will feature restrooms, ticket vending machines, two ADA accessible ramps and a new platform shelter. The project also calls for concrete stair rehabilitation, landscaping and other aesthetic improvements, and a full-depth pavement reconstruction at portions of the existing parking lot.

The project’s first phase included demolishing an old post office building, rehabilitating the platform and adding parking spaces. The project’s second phase is scheduled to be complete in early 2013.
