Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) today is marking the fifth anniversary of The Tide light-rail service in Norfolk, Va.

The agency will hold a ceremony featuring remarks from HRT President and Chief Executive Officer William Harrell and Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander.

Since it began operating in 2011, the line has generated $532 million in economic development in Norfolk, according to a promotional video HRT released earlier this month.

In addition, The Tide has led to an increase in the number of residential housing units in downtown Norfolk, according to the video. In 2010, 2,050 housing units existed in the city's downtown, but by 2016, the number increased to 3,527.
