Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson June 7 received the Rail Leadership Award from American Passenger Rail Coalition (APRC) at a reception held in Union Station, Washington, D.C. Thompson served as a member of National Railroad Passenger Corp. (Amtrak) board from May 1990 to September 1994, and from June 1998 to May 2001. Thompson also served as chairman from September 1998 to May 2001.

"We know Secretary Tommy Thompson as not only a rail leader but a leader who is passionate about Amtrak and the development of high-speed rail," said APRC Board Chairman Matthew White, president of E. James White Communications, at the ceremony, according to a prepared statement. "Everyone here this evening thanks you for that passion and the leadership you brought to Amtrak."

During Thompson’s chairmanship, Amtrak ridership and revenues climbed four consecutive years to a record 22.5 million passengers and more than $1 billion in revenue.
