The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) yesterday approved a CA$2.14 billion 2020 operating budget that calls for new service, protects recent service improvements and adds 10 cents to most fares.

The new budget increases spending by nearly CA$85 million from the 2019 budget.

The 2020 budget calls for the hiring of 121 operators to increase service by 128,000 hours across 25 surface routes and 50 staff members to aid in the reduction of fare evasion, TTC officials said in a press release.

TTC will also fund and continue recent service improvements, including the expansion of subway and streetcar service.

The budget calls for an additional CA$27 million subsidy from the city of Toronto and another CA$26.4 million from the implementation of a revenue protection strategy that will recover costs from fare evasion. The fare hike on all fares, except the adult cash fare, will generate another CA$31.4 million.

Fare increases will take effect March 1, 2020.

The commission also approved a CA$7.4 billion 2020-2029 capital budget that invests in longer term projects to reduce crowding on the system, keep the system in a state of good repair, improve accessibility and increase rail capacity at Bloop-Yonge Station in Toronto.

Both budgets require the Toronto City Council's approval.
