Toronto Transit Commission begins streetcar storage expansion project

The Toronto Transit Commission last week officially launched construction at the Hillcrest Complex to make room to store and maintain 25 new streetcars.

The TTC is receiving 60 new streetcars, which are jointly funded by C$568 million in funding from the federal and Ontario governments, and the city of Toronto, TTC officials said in a press release.

TTC’s existing streetcar facilities can accommodate a total of 239 streetcars. The upgrades to Hillcrest, located at 1138 Bathurst St., will allow for a total fleet size of 264 vehicles.

Since 2020, the TTC has operated only low-floor, high-capacity, fully accessible streetcars on its network. Construction, which will be done in two phases, is expected to take five years to complete. A project cost estimate was not included in the press release.
