Toronto Transit Commission sets 12-month ridership record
advertisement
Between May 2008 and May 2009, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) set an all-time ridership high of 470.9 million rides on its subway, streetcar and bus systems, beating the previous 12-month record of 466 million rides set last fall. For all of 2009, TTC expects to record 473 million rides.
The agency is working to accommodate rising ridership demand. Early next year, TTC will begin operating new subway cars that feature 10 percent more capacity than the current vehicles. The agency also plans to replace its streetcar fleet with 204 new low-floor vehicles. And in 2015, TTC plans to launch service on the Spadina subway extension. By 2021, the agency expects to carry an additional 175 million riders.
