The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) posted record ridership of 510 million riders between Oct. 3, 2011, and Oct. 2, 2012, TTC officials announced last week.
The agency anticipates to reach 514 million riders by 2012's end, and has projected a ridership of 528 million in 2013, TTC officials said in a prepared statement.
To address the ridership increase, the TTC added extra service on 77 subway, streetcar and bus routes in September and October, they said. In addition, the new Toronto Rocket subway trains continue to be put into service on the Yonge-University-Spadina line, adding another 10 percent capacity. Also, a new signal system is being installed on the line to allow for more trains and greater service frequency.
In 2014, Toronto will introduce its next generation of streetcars into service.
