On March 30, the Toronto Transit Commission plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Toronto subway by re-enacting the official opening train ride on March 30, 1954, followed by a party in the Union Station’s Grand Hall.

About 250,000 passengers rode the original 4.6-mile route between Eglinton and Union on opening day, establishing the subway as an icon for a booming post-war economy, according to a prepared statement.

During the celebration, the commission will present a 10-minute video showing highlights of the subway's construction and opening.
