Yesterday, Transport Canada announced a $2 million contract was awarded to BEL Contracting to prepare a Port Moody site for track relocation work for TransLink’s Evergreen Line in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The tracks will be relocated to accommodate a portion of the line’s guideway adjacent to Clarke Street, from Queens to Mary streets. To begin in August, the work includes the relocation of utilities, realignment of Columbia Street adjacent to the tracks and construction of a gravel base for relocated tracks.

The British Columbia government plans to select a primary contractor to design and build the Evergreen Line later this summer; final track construction and relocation work is slated to begin in 2013.

An extension of TransLink’s SkyTrain light rapid-transit system that’s scheduled to open in summer 2016, the $1.4 billion Evergreen Line will serve Coquitlam and Port Moody, including Douglas College. Funding will be provided by the province of British Columbia, Canadian government and TransLink, which will operate the 6.8-mile line.

“The Evergreen Line is important in helping the tri-cities area and the region overall reach its full potential, and already we’re seeing development with that in mind,” said TransLink Chief Operating Officer Doug Kelsey in a prepared statement.
