Construction begins today on TransLink's new Canada Line SkyTrain station, which is designed to provide better transit options riders in Richmond and the Capstan Village area of British Columbia.

Projected to open in 2023, the CA$52 million Capstan Station will feature a larger concourse, increased platform length and waiting space, dual escalator sets and commercial retail areas.

The project will be funded primarily by the city of Richmond — which raised $32 million from developers through voluntary contributions — and TransLink. The funding partnership is the first of its kind in TransLink’s history, agency officials said in a news release.

The station will provide easier access to rapid transit between the Bridgeport and Aberdeen stations, they said.

This is the second time TransLink has constructed an additional SkyTrain station to serve an in-operation line, following Lake City Way Station that was completed after the Millennium Line opened in 2002.
