TransLink has put into service an additional West Coast Express (WCE) train to boost reliability and capacity on the Vancouver commuter-rail line.

The newly refurbished train, which entered service June 19, makes two trips every weekday, TransLink officials said in a press release. WCE is a weekday commuter-rail service that runs 43 miles between Mission and Vancouver, British Columbia.

The new train is part of a WCE fleet refurbishment project, which is funded by the Canadian government, the provincial government and TransLink.

The initiative seeks to improve the quality of WCE locomotive engines nearing the end of their lifespan by reducing engine emissions by up to 50%, extending the lifespan of the engine by 15 years and adding newly painted cars. The project is expected to wrap up in 2026.

In May, WCE ridership reached 116,000 boardings, up nearly 55% from the same month last year.
