TransLink has replaced aging speakers and signs in the SkyTrain system by installing 280 new customer information screens and more than 1,400 new speakers at stations along the Expo and Millennium lines.
The upgrades have modernized communication on the SkyTrain system and improved the Vancouver, British Columbia, agency's ability to communicate with customers, TransLink officials said in a press release.
The upgrades include:
real-time digital screens;
new "next-train" screens on platforms and station entrances to let customers know when their next train is expected to arrive;
general information screens with live service information and updates; and
more than 1,200 new CCTV cameras along the Expo and Millennium lines.
This $79 million program is part of a larger $92.4 million Rapid Transit Systems Rehabilitation and Maintenance Project paid for under the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund, which is funded by the Canadian government (50%), British Columbia government (33%) and TransLink (17%).
