In September and October, average weekday ridership in TransLink's Northeast Sector was 25 percent higher than the same months in 2016.

The sector comprises the cities of Coquitlam, Port Moody and Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, as well as the villages of Anmore and Belcarra. The ridership jump followed the opening of the 6.8-mile Evergreen Extension of the Millennium SkyTrain line in December 2016.

In addition, weekend ridership in the Northeast Sector is up 50 percent year over year, TransLink officials said in a press release.

"The growth we've seen since the launch of Evergreen is nothing short of astounding, and demonstrates the kind of impact that this kind of transit infrastructure investment can have," said TransLink Chief Executive Officer Kevin Desmond.

From Dec. 2, 2016, through Oct. 31, 2017, there were 8.6 million boardings on the Evergreen extension.

Ridership on the Evergreen line is expected to grow significantly in the coming years as development near the stations continues at a rapid clip, TransLink officials said.

Currently, CA$3.8 billion worth of projects are in development or under construction next to the extension between the Lougheed and Lafarge Lake-Douglas stations.
