TransLink plans to begin upgrading the Burrard SkyTrain Station in Vancouver beginning in early 2022.
The project is expected to take two years to complete and will require the station's closure.
Burrard Station was built in 1985 and has not had a significant upgrade in its 36 years of operation, TransLink officials said in a news release. It's the fourth-busiest station in the SkyTrain system and at peak times is congested because the facility has only three escalators and one elevator.
The new station will feature double the number of escalators and elevators to provide greater accessibility and relieve congestion on platforms and the concourse level. In addition, mechanical and electrical equipment will be upgraded to meet current power demands, TransLink officials said.
Since station entrances are hard to access, the project will include a relocated Burrard Street entrance to align with the pedestrian crossing and make it easier to enter and exit the station.
