Ridership on TransLink’s SkyTrain, SeaBus and other transit services jumped 11 percent to 348 million in 2010 vs. 2009.
Subtracting ridership for the month of February, when Vancouver, British Columbia, hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, the system’s ridership reached 309.5 million, or 7.8 percent higher than in 2009’s total.
“The Olympics showed the people of metro Vancouver what their (transit) system can do,” TransLink CEO Ian Jarvis said in a prepared statement.
Also affecting ridership last year: the addition of the SkyTrain Canada Line, which recorded 38.5 million riders. TransLink’s fare audit services found 40 percent of Canada Line riders use the SkyTrain as part of an integrated commuter plan, but 60 percent use SkyTrain for their entire trip.
