Transit groups organize 'Don’t X Out Public Transit Day' in response to House-proposed funding cuts

Congress may have passed a surface transportation bill extension last week, but the fight for a long-term reauthorization is far from over. The House has proposed a six-year bill that would cut public transit funding by 30 percent — a move that, if approved, would mean cuts to transit service, increased fares, overcrowding, longer wait times, service delays and further deteriorating infrastructure, public transit supporters say.

That’s why the American Public Transportation Association, Reconnecting America, Amalgamated Transit Union, Transport Workers Union and other transit organizations have declared today “Don’t X Out Public Transit Day.” Transit agencies, employees, unions, advocates and riders will hold rallies and events throughout the country, handing out materials and speaking out about the proposed cuts. Rallies will be held in cities such as Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and San Francisco.

Public transit supporters that are unable to attend rallies in person can participate through social media at www.facebook.com/publictransportation or @gogreenpublic using #dontXtransit.
