Tri-Rail's ridership since its January 1989 launch has reached a big, round number. Yesterday, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority announced the commuter railroad carried its 50 millionth passenger.
Tri-Rail's ridership has been steadily increasing this year; October ridership so far is up 23.6 percent year over year. The agency now is carrying an average of 15,822 passengers daily. In 2008's first half, Tri-Rail was the third-fastest-growing commuter-rail system in the country, according to the American Public Transportation Association.
