Tri-Rail service operator South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) has begun testing equipment and training personnel on Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) track as Tri-Rail preps to begin service to downtown Miami.
High-speed railroad Brightline approved Tri-Rail's plan to have trains enter MiamiCentral Station as part of the testing, since Brightline currently operates its own trains on a section of FEC track, SFRTA officials said in a press release.
Tests began yesterday and will continue through the end of this week. The Tri-Rail trains will change tracks from the South Florida Rail Corridor — where Tri-Rail currently operates — onto FEC track just south of the Miami Metrorail Transfer Station.
Onboard personnel, including railroad staff and contractors, are trained by a Brightline qualified engineer, SFRTA officials said.
The Tri-Rail trains are limited to 40-mph speeds on 8 miles of track through downtown Miami and more than a dozen nearby communities.
