TriMet begins initiative to increase security, passenger services

Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) plans to implement new technologies to increase security.

TriMet plans to install closed-circuit television cameras in rail cars and stations. The cameras are designed to stream live video onto the agency’s computer network, enabling law enforcement personnel to monitor activity.

The agency also plans to install a Transit Tracker system, which would provide passengers up-to-the-minute information on train and bus departures and arrivals. Data will be generated by ground censors located along train rails, and sent via the network to TriMet’s boarding platforms, and phone- and web-based information systems, according to a prepared statement.

TriMet plans to monitor the new technologies through NetScout System’s nGenius® Performance Management System, designed to help organizations optimize the performance of their computer network and applications.
