The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) yesterday joined TriMet officials to officially mark the start of construction on the "A Better Red" project.
The project calls for extending TriMet's light-rail MAX Red Line between Portland's airiport and Hillsboro, Oregon, to serve 10 more stations.
The FTA allocated a $99.9 million grant to the effort. The FTA grant covers a substantial portion of the project's estimated $215 million cost.
A Better Red calls for adding a second set of tracks in two sections of the MAX Red Line between Gateway Transit Center and Portland International Airport to reduce delays caused by MAX trains traveling in both directions on a single set of tracks.
The project also involves track improvements between Gateway and Portland International to improve service reliability on the Red Line and keep trains running on time throughout the entire MAX light-rail system, TriMet officials said in a news release.
The extended MAX Red Line service is projected to start in 2024.
