The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) carried nearly 8.7 million passengers on its light-rail, commuter-rail and bus systems in August, a 1.5 percent increase compared with August 2010.

The agency posted the largest gains on the MAX Green Line and Westside Express Service (WES) commuter-rail line, both of which opened in 2009. Weekday MAX Green Line ridership jumped 18.6 percent year over year to 1,660 riders. Weekday MAX Green Line ridership climbed 12.7 percent to 23,100, while weekend trips rose 6.7 percent to 26,900.

The rest of TriMet’s light-rail system posted ridership gains, as well. Weekly trips rose 3.2 percent to 846,000; weekday trips, 4.3 percent to 134,400; and rush-hour trips, 3.2 percent to 38,200. However, weekend trips dipped 0.7 percent to 174,000.
