Next week, the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) plans to begin laying the foundation for a new electronic fare system at its Lloyd Center/NE 11th Ave. MAX light-rail station.

The new fare system will enable riders to pay using a contactless fare card or a smartphone equipped with near-field communication, agency officials said in a press release.

Riders will also be able to use a credit/debit card, according to TriMet's website.

Work will continue at the Lloyd Center station through Aug. 21.

The new system has been installed at 43 of TriMet's rail stations, and construction is also underway at stations in the Portland State University area and in Beaverton and Hillsboro, Ore. The new e-fare system is expected go online in 2017, agency officials said.
