The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) yesterday announced the award of $289 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARP) grant funding to Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet).
The funds will help the transit agency cover preventative maintenance and capital expenses as the agency and its service region continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Transit has played a crucial role for essential workers during the pandemic and has helped transport people to vaccine appointments, said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a press release.
Federal funding to transit agencies "will help protect transit employees from layoffs, keep transit service running and ensure people can get where they need to go," he said.
Signed by President Joe Biden in March, the ARP Act includes $30 billion for public transportation.
