Next week, the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) will begin building the 14.7-mile Washington County Commuter Rail line.
To be completed within 30 days, the $117.3 million project’s first phase calls for replacing track, ties and ballast between Beaverton and Wilsonville. Scheduled to begin in 2007, the second phase includes building five stations and a vehicle storage facility, installing a signal system, adding a second track along portions of the line, realigning a track segment and constructing park-and-ride lots.
To open in September 2008, the line will serve Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin and Wilsonville.
Meanwhile, the agency recently obtained an $800,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to add security cameras throughout the I-205 MAX light-rail system and at downtown Portland Mall bus stops. The funds were awarded through the Transit Security Grant Program, which is part of the department’s Infrastructure Protection Program.
