The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) on Aug. 12 will begin phasing out ticket sales from its mobile application in favor of its electronic fare system, Hop Fastpass.

TriMet’s mobile ticketing app was launched in 2013 as a “stepping-stone” for eventually transitioning to Hop Fastpass, which went public in 2017, TriMet officials said in a press release.

Now, agency officials hope to eliminate the app and most non-Hop paper tickets by December.

Riders instead will purchase transit-rail fare on a reloadable plastic card or a virtual card to be stored in Apple Wallet or Google Pay. Riders then will tap their card at a Hop ticket reader located at MAX light-rail and Westside Express Service commuter-rail stations, as well as on streetcars and buses.

TriMet will host ticket exchange events throughout the year where riders can swap their mobile or paper tickets for a Hop card of equal value, officials said.
