TriMet unveils proposed FY2012 budget; NICTD to raise fares

The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) has proposed a $434 million operating budget for fiscal-year 2012 that includes no service cuts and would restore some previously-cut MAX and bus services.

The budget calls for adding Blue Line MAX trips during evening rush hour; increasing adult fares by 5 cents per ride and $4 for a monthly pass; raising the cost of the youth monthly pass by $1; increasing the diesel budget from $2.42 per gallon to $3.13; funding safety initiatives; and advancing the Portland-Milwaukie light-rail project through final design stage.

The proposed budget is “good news” compared with spending plans from the past two fiscal years, said TriMet General Manager Neil McFarlane in a prepared statement.

“While we remain in a very constrained financial environment, we are able to make important investments in some service restoration, key safety initiatives and purchase new buses,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District’s (NICTD) board recently approved a 2 percent annual fare increase for the South Shore Line passenger-rail service, effective June 1. New prices will apply to monthly tickets starting in June. Hegewisch fares are unaffected, NICTD officials said in a prepared statement.
