City of Tucson, Ariz., officials announced last week that they awarded a $56 million contract to Old Pueblo Trackworks, a joint venture between Granite Construction Inc. and RailWorks Track Systems, to build the city’s first federally funded streetcar project in more than 60 years.
The new four-mile electric light-rail system will serve the city’s main corridor. The project consists of new concrete streetcar guideways, 22 covered stops for accessibility and reconstruction of roadways, including modification and replacement of water systems and other associated utility work.
Granite’s share of the contract will be about $29 million, which will be booked into the backlog during the first quarter, Granite officials said in a prepared statement.
Work already is under way on the new system, which is expected to be completed by summer 2013.
