On June 14, Minnesota, Twin Cities and U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) officials celebrated the grand opening of Metro Transit's Central Corridor light-rail line. To be dubbed the METRO Green Line, the 11-mile route links St. Paul and Minneapolis. It features 18 stations and serves the downtown areas of the two cities, as well as the University of Minnesota, Midway District and State Capitol complex. The Green Line connects to the METRO Blue Line, which serves such destinations as Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America. At Target Field Station, Blue and Green line riders can connect to the Northstar commuter-rail line. The Federal Transit Administration contributed $474 million in Capital Investment Grant Program dollars, as well as $4.5 million in other USDOT funds, toward the project. The remainder of the $957 million line was covered by state and local funding sources.Metro Transit officials estimate the Green Line will serve more than 40,000 passengers each weekday by 2030.
