U.S. DOT presents FY 2003 budget

U.S. Department of Transportation Feb. 4 unveiled its 2003 budget, which would include $59.3 billion to improve security and safety of the nation’s transportation system.
Other earmarks include $716 million for Federal Transit Administration, which includes a $521 million placeholder for intercity passenger rail service — Amtrak announced Feb. 1 it would request $1.2 billion — and $123 million for safety and operations.
Federal Transit Administration would receive $7.2 billion, including $145 million toward supporting President Bush’s New Freedom Initiative to reduce workforce-entrance barriers to people with disabilities.
