Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced it's awarding a $900 million Full Funding Grant Agreement to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) for the $3.1 billion Wiehle Avenue extension of the Dulles Metrorail project. The funds will be distributed through 2016.
The 11.7-mile heavy-rail line will extend the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Metrorail system from just east of the West Falls Church station through Tysons Corner to Wiehle Avenue in Reston, Va. The project calls for building five stations, improving an existing rail yard and purchasing 64 rail cars.
MWAA plans to extend the line beyond Dulles International Airport under a second phase.
