USDOT issues 54 more stimulus grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently announced another round of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants.
The department issued 54 grants totaling $346.2 million. Funds are available through the Federal Transit Administration assistance programs. Since President Obama signed the recovery act into law on Feb. 17, the USDOT has issued $1.8 billion in grants.
Recent grant recipients include:
• Metra, $46.6 million to rehabilitate bridges on the Electric and Union Pacific North lines, and replace fiber optic cable on the BNSF Railway Co. commuter-rail line;
• Alaska Railroad Corp., $25.8 million to construct and rehabilitate track, purchase and install automated passenger and safety equipment, and complete general construction at various facilities;
• Bay Area Rapid Transit, $17.1 million to install new auxiliary power supply equipment on 30 rail cars and new coverboards over the electric third rail, replace cables in the Transbay Tube, replace worn-out passenger car interiors, reconfigure rail car interiors, install between-car safety barriers, conduct preliminary work on a wheel truing machine and construct a new walkway at Balboa Park station;
• New Orleans Regional Transit Authority, $2.4 million to complete the St. Charles tie replacement program; and
• Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, $1.1 million to conduct preventive maintenance on the MAX light-rail system.
