USDOT to guide ITS implementation
advertisement
U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater Jan. 8 announced Federal Register publication of a Federal Highway Administration regulation and Federal Transit Administration policy expected to result in accelerated local-level deployment of integrated Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) by requiring regional ITS architecture development.
USDOT officials believe that, in the course of regional architecture development, transportation agencies would work together considering existing and future needs to help ensure future compatibility. The rule and policy also would require regional architectures to conform with the national ITS architecture — subsequent projects would have to follow suit.
USDOT would provide states, transit agencies and others charged with ITS implementation with training, guidance and technical assistance. Details would be posted to USDOT’s ITS Web site as they become available.
