Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and Federal Transit Administration issued 13 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants totaling $189.8 million.

Proceeds will be used to purchase new vehicles, increase safety and security initiatives, and construct, rehabilitate or maintain various transit systems.

Transit rail-related grants include:
• $77.2 million to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail project;
• $49.9 million to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to improve a number of stations;
• $43.8 million to the state of Connecticut for the New Haven Line station improvement project, Shore Line East-Branford Station parking expansion project, New Haven rail yard component change-out shop and Danbury Branch centralized train control signalization project; and
• $6.8 million to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority for the Metro Red Line subway escalator canopy project.

To date, the USDOT has obligated $26.5 billion of an available $48.1 billion to fund more than 7,988 approved projects in 55 U.S. states and territories.
