UTA proposes fuel surcharge

As the price of diesel fuel continues to skyrocket, the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is considering a fuel surcharge. Without it, the agency could face a $5 million budget shortfall this year.
UTA already has cut $2.7 million in internal expenses, such as by delaying hires, eliminating some contracted services, restricting travel and decreasing supply purchases.
The authority proposes to implement a 25-cent surcharge on cash fares, 50-cent surcharge on TRAX light-rail round-trip tickets and FrontRunner commuter-rail base fares, $2.50 surcharge on 10-ride passes and $8 surcharge on monthly passes.
