The Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) new streetcar line will begin regular service on Dec. 8.

To mark the S-Line's opening, UTA will allow the public to ride the S-Line for free tomorrow if they provide a food donation for the Utah Food Bank. In addition, the agency will offer a $1 promotional fare for a limited time to riders who pay using electronic fare media, UTA officials said in an announcement on the agency’s website.

The two-mile line will connect with UTA's TRAX light-rail system. Formerly known as the Sugar House Streetcar, the S-Line was a joint project between UTA, Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake. Construction began in April 2012.

The $55.5 million project was partially funded by a $26 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery II grant.
