Rail News: Passenger Rail
UTA to open new commuter-rail line in December
The Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA) new FrontRunner commuter-rail line from Provo to Salt Lake City will open Dec. 10, UTA officials announced late last week.
The new 45-mile line is an extension of FrontRunner’s Salt Lake City-to-Weber County route that opened in April 2008.
Construction on the Provo-to-Salt Lake City line is more than 90 percent completed, UTA officials said. Testing of the line is expected to begin in summer.
The new line will feature stations in Murray, South Jordan, Draper, Lehi, American Fork, Orem and Provo; a future station is planned in Vineyard.
To prepare for the opening, UTA officials have invited the public to participate in the process to adjust bus routes to serve new FrontRunner stations in Provo, Orem, American Fork and Lehi. Commuter bus service between Utah and Salt Lake counties also is expected to be affected by the introduction of commuter rail, UTA officials said.
