• Alstom Transport recently received an order from the municipality of Amsterdam for 23 Metropolis trainsets. The $272.2 million contract includes an option for additional trainsets for Amsterdam’s North-South line, which is under construction. Alstom will produce the metros at facilities in Valenciennes, France, and Katowice, Poland. The first trainset is scheduled to be delivered in spring 2012.
• ArcelorMittal Steelton will spend $54 million to “significantly upgrade” its rail production process with a new walking-beam reheat furnace that includes advanced energy and environmental technology, according to a prepared statement. The upgrade is designed to “enhance Steelton’s position to meet the needed improvements in rail infrastructure and will support the growth of high-speed passenger service in the U.S.,” the company said. The new furnace is projected for start-up in 2012.
• OnTrackAmerica (OTA) is conducting preliminary research to develop an economic development and environmental policy case to reinstitute service on the Stewartstown Railroad, a privately owned, five-mile branch line in York, Pa., and the Northern Central Railroad, a 20-mile line owned by York County. OTA also is providing consulting services to the Susquehanna Rail Authority and Bradford County to evaluate the potential for a truck-to-rail transload facility that would serve Marcellus Shale Construction and other regional projects, according to an OTA-issued statement.
• Planning, engineering and program management firm Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam Inc. (LAN) named Philip Meaders vice president. Since joining LAN in 1985, Meaders has been involved in a variety of engineering projects. His current responsibilities include management of the $350 million Southeast Corridor Light Rail Transit Expansion Program for Houston’s Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) and development of other national rail projects.
• Freight brokerage Con-way Multimodal named John Wees senior account executive. He most recently served as operations/sales manager at ARPCO Transport Services; before that, he was logistics account manager at Baer Transportation Services.
