• Bombardier Transportation signed an agreement with Toronto’s Metrolinx to exercise an option on a June 2009 contract for 182 vehicles. The $745 million deal calls for delivery between 2013 and 2020. The pact also enables Metrolinx to order up to an additional 118 vehicles at a later date. Bombardier also announced its FLEXITY Outlook tram for a system in Linz, Austria, has received the red dot design award honorable mention in the automobile and transportation category.

• MTU Detroit Diesel Inc. announced it signed a contract to lease approximately 150,000 square feet of warehouse space in Graniteville, Mich.’s Sage Mill Industrial Park. The new warehouse is scheduled to open in July. MTU Detroit Diesel also has begun the hiring process for an engine production facility in Graniteville, where it expects to employ 250 people by 2015.

• RMI announced it reached a new five-year agreement with CN for the continued use of its OASIS software, which provides operational control of the Class I’s intermodal terminals. OASIS is a decision support system designed to automate intermodal terminal operations using algorithms to solve logistical problems that arise in intermodal yards.

• Last week, Schneider National Inc., which provides transportation, logistics and intermodal services, marked its 75th anniversary. The celebration focused on the company’s commitment to the transportation and logistics industry, Schneider officials said in a prepared statement.

• Thales recently signed a contract with Paris metro operator RAPT for a second computer-based interlocking system. Thales will research, develop, supply, install and activate a central control system for lines 9, 10 and 12. The system deployment for line 1 marks a step toward the line’s automation, which is expected to be completed in 2012.

• Interfleet Technology has acquired German company Die Ingenieurwerkstatt GmbH (DI), a consulting firm specializing in safety engineering, maintenance optimization and railway asset management.

• HDR named Vince Izzo director of environmental services for the engineering firm’s global transportation program. He will oversee delivery of environmental planning and compliance services for transportation infrastructure projects around the world. Izzo previously was HDR’s West Region environmental services lead.
