• The Nigerian Railway Corp. recently took delivery of five Model C25 six-axle diesel locomotives from GE Transportation. Built by GE Transportation South America, the units feature a 7FDL 12-cylinder, 2,500-horsepower engine and will be used for both freight and passenger service. Twenty additional units will be delivered during the year’s second half.

• Thales was awarded a $54.7 million contract to design, develop and supply SelTrac communications-based train control (CBTC) technology for a driverless operation of the new Incheon Metro Line, which is scheduled to be open in time for the Asian Olympic Games in August 2014. Thales’ CBTC solution includes moving-block technology, free-space radio for data communications between the train and wayside equipment, supervision subsystems, SCADA systems and operation of the platform screen-door system.

• Bombardier Transportation won a $31 million, three-year contract to provide locomotive and passenger rail-car maintenance service for part of Montreal agency Agence Metropolitaine de Transport’s fleet. Under the pact, Bombardier will be responsible for maintaining rolling stock for the Dorion-Rigaud, Blainville-St.-Jerome and Delson-Candiac lines.

• CIT Group Inc.’s board recently elected John Thain chairman and chief executive officer. He replaces Peter Tobin, who’d been serving as interim CEO. Thain previously was chairman and CEO of Merrill Lynch until it was sold to Bank of America. He’s also served as president and chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs Group, and CEO of the New York Stock Exchange.

• STV Inc. recently announced two executive promotions: Christopher Holliday was named senior vice president and Eugene Kim, VP. Holliday will continue in his role as national leader for the firm’s transportation and infrastructure systems, and security practices. He has more than 25 years of rail experience, including extensive work in the design, manufacture and procurement of rolling stock and equipment. Kim will continue to serve as STV’s western region planning manager for the transportation and infrastructure division. He has more than 15 years of experience in transit planning, program evaluation and implementation.
