Updates from Harsco, Ansaldo STS, Bombardier, EMD and MER MEC

• Harsco Corp.’s Harsco Rail unit recently received a $6 million order from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority for Utility Track Vehicle prime movers. The vehicles will be used to power work trains for a range of maintenance-of-way requirements, including snow removal, rail repair and replacement, and the supply of power for hydraulic and pneumatic tools. Deliveries will begin in January 2011.

• Ansaldo STS USA will supply a communications-based control (CBTC) system as part of a $16.4 million “strategic alliance agreement” with Hangzhou, China-based Zhejiang Zheda INSIGMA Group Co. Ltd., according to a prepared statement. INSIGMA is implementing Ansaldo STS’ MicroLok® II CPU for the 33.2-mile Hangzhou Metro Line 1, which will feature 34 stations and 48 trains.

• Bombardier Transportation received a $33 million order to supply 18 additional double-deck coaches to Deutsche Bahn (DB) AG. DB is exercising an option from a 2003 agreement that called for Bombardier to deliver 298 double-deck coaches plus an option for up to 300 more. DB plans to use the coaches, some of which will be in service by December, for its DB Regio service in Borth Rhine-Westphalia and in Baden-Wurttemberg.

• Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. named Marise Stewart director of government and industry relations. Stewart most recently served as a principal at DuffAssociates. Her resumé also includes a government relations stint at Textron Inc., legislative director for Rep. Bill McCollom (R-Fla.), and director of the governor of Missouri’s Washington, D.C., office.

• MER MEC S.p.A. has been accepted as an “Associated Member” of The UNISIG Consortium. A unit of MERMEC Group, Monopoli, Italy-based MER MEC is a developer and supplier of onboard and trackside signaling equipment. UNISIG drafts technical specifications for European rail traffic management systems and electronic train control systems.
