• Siemens Mobility recently received a subcontract from Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology (NRIET) to supply communications-based train control (CBTC) technology for 16.1-mile Line 1 of the metro system in Suzhou, China. The subcontract is worth about $28.6 million. Siemens Mobility will supply a Trainguard MT CBTC system with Airlink, the free-propagation radio system, the Sicas ECC electronic interlocking system and AzS axle counters. It’ll also work with NRIET to install a Vicos OC 501 operations control system. Passenger service on the line is scheduled to begin in mid-2012.

• Bombardier Transportation received an order from AB Transitio to deliver 11 three-car BOMBARDIER CONTESSA trains valued at about $137 million. The agreement includes an option for five additional units. The trains — which will be leased by Swedish operators Lanstrafiken Kronoberg, Kalmar Lans Trafik and Hallandstrafiken — can reach a maximum speed of 111.6 mph and will be managed by local traffic authorities in Denmark. The cars will be produced in Germany at Bombardier’s Hennigsdorf and Gorlitz plants; the bogies will be produced in Siegen.

• Joseph Gurskis has joined Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) as a principal in the firm’s multi-modal goods movement advisory practice. He’ll focus on the development and delivery of freight rail and intermodal consulting services to public- and private-sector clients. Gurskis comes to PB with more than 30 years of transportation and logistics management/consulting experience throughout Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Latin America and the Middle East, according to a prepared statement. He’ll be based in PB’s Herndon, Va., office.
