• The Russian Railways AG (RZD) ordered 200 “modern sleeping cars” from Siemens Mobility and coach builder Tverskoy Vagonostroitelny Zavod AG (TVZ). Siemens’ portion of the contract is worth $461.4 million. The new coaches can be operated in Russian and standard-gauge European railway networks, making them “suitable for cross-border service as operated by RZD, as well as for operation across central and western Europe, according to a prepared statement. Beginning in 2010, the coaches will be built in Siemens’ plant in Vienna, Austria; and TVZ’s wagon factory in Tver northwest of Moscow.

• Skanska received a $73.5 million contract from the Swedish Rail Administration and the Swedish Road Administration to add a second track on parts of the Bohus-Nödinge project phase in western Sweden. The contract also calls for expanding the E45 road to a four-lane motorway. Skanska’s contract includes ground works and improvements for 2.1 miles of new dual track railroad and expansion of road E45 to motorway standard on a 2-mile stretch. Work is scheduled to be completed in December 2012.

• RailPros Inc. was awarded a three-year, $20 million contract to provide on-call project management, construction management and staff augmentation services for Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink). Under the pact, RailPros will provide services for a range of projects, including positive train control, an OC service expansion program, the Perris Valley Line and maintenance-of-way information systems.

• Progress Rail Services received a $7.9 million contract to overhaul six 3,000 horsepower F40 locomotives for MTA Metro North Railroad. Progress Rail Services will replace 1,800-gallon fuel tanks with 2,500-gallon tanks, reducing the amount of time that the locomotives will be out of service for fueling at New Jersey Transit’s Hoboken facility. The locomotives, which will be in service on Metro North’s West of Hudson service, also will be equipped with rebuilt main engines, main and auxiliary generators, and new “hotel” power generator sets for lights, heat and air conditioning, according to a prepared statement.

• RailComm has been selected to provide a wireless remote-control yard system at CSX Transportation’s Osborn Yard in Louisville, Ky. The RailComm Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) system will provide remote control to several GE - Transportation HydraSwitch machines. RailComm’s DOC system will be configured to control all switches individually and provide eNtrance eXit (NX) routing functionality. RailComm’s 2.4 GHz RADiANT™ data radios will provide a wireless communications network to link the office with field locations.
