The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) last week celebrated 25 years of its TRAX light-rail operations.
Since Dec. 4, 1999, UTA’s TRAX has grown from a solo Blue Line between downtown Salt Lake City and Sandy, Utah, to a three-line service throughout the Salt Lake valley that moved over 10.6 million riders in 2023.
In a press release, UTA officials shared several upcoming capital projects that highlight what is coming next for the regional light-rail service.
Recently, UTA's board approved a contract with Stadler Rail to build up to 80 new ligh- rail cars with low-floor accessible boarding. Along with fleet upgrades, UTA is also working to improve its traffic signal priority technology, giving trains priority at intersections and reducing wait times.
The South Jordon Downtown Station will open April 13, 2025, and will connect the southernmost parts of the TRAX network to South Jordan and the new home stadium of the Salt Lake Bees, Utah's Minor League Baseball team.
By 2032, UTA officials expect to begin operations on the new Orange Line, which will connect Salt Lake City International Airport directly to the University of Utah. Also in 2032, UTA officials anticipate completing a realignment of the Red Line, which would bring service throughout the Granary District to Ballpark Station.
