Count the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) among the many agencies that are posting significant ridership gains this year. In September, the authority carried 3.7 million passengers system-wide, up 24 percent compared with September 2007's total.

Ridership on the TRAX light-rail system shot up 19.8 percent to 1.3 million. The agency's FrontRunner commuter-rail line — which opened in April — carried 196,158 passengers last month.

Average weekday ridership reached 51,849 on the light-rail system and 8,250 on the commuter rail system.
