Utah tourist road expands steam-engine fleet

On July 7, two steam engines joined couplers for the first time in 50 years, re-teaming on Utah’s Heber Valley Railroad.
Before entering retirement, steam locomotive #300 previously moved high-temperature pig-iron cars out of Columbia Steel Corp.’s Ironton, Utah, plant and handed them off to another locomotive, which would move the cars to Geneva Steel’s Vineyard, Utah, plant.
In many cases, the locomotive finishing the trip was steam engine #618, which now is part of Heber Valley’s fleet.
The railroad plans to rebuild engine #300 to join its steam-locomotive fleet, which carrys tourists between Heber City and Vivian Park.
